Hey friends,
Welcome to this week’s edition of Wednesday Updates!
Today's Update: The Tree Frog Terrarium
It’s hard to believe, but it’s been 200 days since I set up the Tree Frog Terrarium. This ecosystem really has been a joy to watch, when looking inside it truly feels like you’re peering into a slice of the rainforest.
Viewers of the build video will know that I built this ecosystem for my hourglass tree frog named Grogu. I’m happy to report he’s loving his mini slice of the rainforest. I often catch him sleeping inside one of the bromeliads throughout the day. When night falls, he goes on the hunt for small crickets and fruit flies that roam the tank. I recently caught him on a Philodendron Verrucosum leaf hunting down some fruit flies, isn’t he cute!?
Since publishing the build video a couple of months back, I have made a few additions to the terrarium in terms of plants. To add more interest to the base, I planted a couple of cuttings of Alternanthera reineckii mini. I love this plant and it’s metallic/bronze leaves in lower light setups, it is however an aquatic plant so it does require consistent high humidity in order for it to thrive.
Top Tips for This Ecosystem
Good ventilation: In a setup like this, mold outbreaks can really be a nightmare. Good air circulation helps prevent mold and promotes plant growth.
Leaf litter: Adding leaves to the base of the ecosystem provides a place for microfauna to thrive. I top up the leaves every few months.
Trim the plants: Cutting off dead or dying leaves will help promote new healthy growth.
Upcoming Project Spotlight
This week’s spotlight goes to this shrimp jar ecosystem I’m working on. It’s a no-filter, low-tech setup for cherry shrimp. I’ve only had it set up for a few weeks, but I’m hoping the shrimp will start breeding soon! Keep an eye out for the build video in the near future :)
Subscriber Showcase
In this section, I want to showcase your work. Reply to this email with a picture of one of your ecosystems for a chance to be featured in next week’s newsletter! (I haven’t got any features this week as we’re just getting this started.)

I like this new format. The youtube videos are great but the articles just put the key information and tips in a very simple and easy to digest bullet-point format, that doesnt take 10 minutes to learn. Definitely subscribing and keep up the good work
theres a plant from my country that looks exactly like marcgravia but i have no idea what it is, i think you would make it look great in a terrarium and its from the rainforest, let me know if youd like a pic!!!
